KASI HISTORY

Kentucky Asset Success Initiative (KASI) began its campaign to increase awareness about the EITC in southeastern Kentucky in 2004. With funding from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, KASI began its work in three eastern Kentucky Counties where IRS data showed that as many as a quarter of eligible residents were not claiming the credit.

The following year KASI added a project in western Kentucky – the Owensboro-Daviess County Asset Building Coalition -- and added several rural counties to the southeastern Kentucky projects. In 2007 KASI expanded its reach in western Kentucky by opening tax sites in Bowling Green as well as Warren and Barren counties, where IRS data also indicated a need for increased EITC education and outreach. In 2009 the Central Kentucky Economic Empowerment Program joined KASI.

Today KASI offers services at 59 sites in 58 counties. More than a dozen banks, corporations, foundations and other entities have provided support to fuel KASI's growth. In 2008 and 2009 KASI received grants from the Internal Revenue Service through its VITA Grant Program.
